Wire Break - Find & Repair DIY

Wire Break - Find & Repair

1.            Hook up tone generator ( see attachment)

*Disconnect the two (wires) from the transmitter on the wall

*Attach one alligator clip to one of the boundary wires

*Ground the second clip (easiest way is to clip to the face plat screw on nearby    electrical outlet)

* ignore the telephone plug – it is not needed

*Flick toggle switch at the top to “tone”. There is now a tone travelling through the wire

2.              At transmitter confirm the radio is picking up the tone (see attachment)

*Turn on radio. Set to lowest AM setting

* Hold close to wire where that is attached to tone generator – you will hear a continuous tone

3.             Use Radio to follow tone travelling through the wire

·         Place radio into wand holder. Position radio so that the radio antenna can project  out the exit hole on the radio holder (enables you to close the hinged lid properly)

·         Wave wand back and forth over the wire. The tone will fade as you wave it away from the wire and will be strongest when right over the wire

·         Follow the wire using this small waving motion to keep you directly over the wire

·         At the break the signal will fade dramatically and/or disappear completely. This is the break

4.           Expose wire and repair

·         Expose wire by digging across the direction of the wire.  A pick is an ideal tool, it allows you to “hook” the wire and gently expose it. In frozen ground chip around the wire to expose it.

·         Repair with  using a marrette with grease with electrical tape or alternately a marrette enclosed in a silicone gel pack

·         Continue tracing the wire in case there is a second break

·         Note:  In frozen ground it is often not possible to find the exact break. You can trace the wire in the opposite direction until you get close to the break then run an overground wire that bypasses the wire break

5.           Reattach boundary wires and test

·        Reattach boundary wires to transmitter. You should NOT hear the break alert.

·        Hold the pet’s receiver up to the transmitter and confirm it is beeping (make sure the batteries are good)

·        Test at the boundary to make sure it is picking up the signal field
